4:00pm - 5:00pm

About the facilitator(s)

Dr. Lena Verdelli, Teachers College

My research involves adapting and testing in randomized controlled trials psychotherapy for depressed people across a variety of cultures and contexts. I have collaborated with academic and humanitarian groups in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa, and have participated in the cultural modification of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for use in resource-poor communities: depressed adults in South Uganda, depressed adolescents in refugee camps in North Uganda (many of whom were child soldiers) and distressed patients in primary care in Goa, India.

About the workshop

We will investigate the intersection of climate change and mental health, elucidating how climate-related disasters and chronic environmental changes can lead to significant distress and mental health issues. Participants will understand how these events, such as floods or extreme heat, can trigger acute stress disorders, depression, and anxiety, while sustained environmental changes can lead to chronic psychological distress. The session will underscore the importance of community resilience, mental health support, and adaptive strategies in climate-stressed settings, fostering a holistic approach to the climate crisis. We will also take a look at how educators can explore and help with climate anxiety in children.
